Pilates vs yoga similarities

When comparing yoga vs Pilates, it is clear they both share important features and differ on others.

Both systems are very sophisticated, yoga based on thousands of years of practice, tradition and study, Pilates based on the work of renown thinker, Josef Pilates who used hist knowledge of Yoga to develop Pilates exercise.

Both systems are integrative. That suggests that yoga and Pilates aim at linking the mind and body.

The six Pilates principles include centering, concentration, control, precision, breath and flow. Yoga also features those six principles though could easily be used to describe the principles of many kinds yoga authors never specifically articulated them.

We like both systems in part because each are essentially bodyweight exercises. Yes, we have no problems with exercise equipment, but the best foundational results are achieved by working out using your bodyweight. It’s also more natural and more fun. There are also benefits that yoga and Pilates share. They each support the development of long, strong, graceful bodies that move efficiently without bulky muscles.

Both systems lead to stress reduction and increased feelings of well-being.

Both yoga and Pilates are excellent rehabilitative systems.

They can also be adjusted for a wide range of people and differing levels of fitness.

Each can also lead to achievements of very high levels of body/mind/spirit fitness.

Pilates vs yoga differences

Click to go from yoga vs pilates to Home Pilates and yoga can also be quite different from each other. It is these differences that some suggest make the two complementary.

As a rule, Pilates focuses more on strength while yoga tends to focus more on stretch. However, each aims at the other quite liberally. There’s lots of stretching in Pilates and strength work in many schools of yoga.

Both Pilates and yoga work with breath, ie on breathing. Especially, in yoga, there could be an extensive set of disciplines associated with breathing.

Many suggest that yoga stresses how you feel while Pilates stresses how you look. Here too there is much cross fertilization.

While both yoga and Pilates stress the body-mind connection, only yoga also incorporates spirituality also.

However, comparing yoga vs Pilates is actually more complicated since there are many different schools of each with different processes and aims.

Certainly, you can do the very physical type of Pilates and complement it with the more spiritual, meditative forms of yoga.

But I don’t think that, in general Pilates and yoga are complementary. There are too many similarities between them.

That is why I don’t agree that the two are strongly complementary. I feel that most people would be better off adding other physical activities to either their yoga or Pilates practice.

Now, alternating each school over months or years is a viable option. But get proficient at one or the other. Then add something very different to your exercise schedule.

Add something that addresses some weakness, or add some form of play and sport, add an activity that takes you out of the yoga or Pilates environment, develop a specific strength.

Essentially, I’m advocating what others often advocate for maximal physical benefits ie cross training.
