Beware of...

First, there are a host of low end ministeppers and minicycles. I have used a few and must say that I can't imagine that they do anything for you, or at least, for me. I remember using a mini stepper a few times and deciding that just marching in place offers a better workout.

To me, that is an example of cheap exercise equipment that's not even worth the price. But if they work for you, go for it.

Specific travel exercise equipment

* I would bring along a good set of resistance bands (exercise bands, strength bands). They are extremely light, compact and are useful. They are also cheap exercise equipment, ranging from a $10 to $100 or so. My advice is to get the upper end and use them to supplement your other exercise sessions.

* Here's a product that intrigued me. Aqua weights. Yep, you guessed it. Collapsed plastic stuff you could fill with water to make a small weight set.

Here too, you could use the equipment at home when you get back.

* Want to work on your core, you know that mid-part of your body which includes the abs, back hips and butt. The Bosu Trainer helps you do just that. Briefly, it looks like a half an exercise ball. An accompanying video should help you devise a terrific routine to keep your middle fit and strong.

* If you want the whole ball, well, an exercise ball that is collapsible and easy to refill may be for you. You'll need some floor space to use it.

I just love breaking up my exercise routine with some exercise ball workouts. Makes me feel like a kid at play again.

* Want real cheap travel exercise equipment? If you want to do some pretty intense cardiovascular intervals, bring along a jump rope. It's a piece of cheap exercise equipment that's light and takes up little space.

* Finally, any exercise dvd can be easily packed and assuming you have the necessary equipment. Just choose your favorite yoga, aerobic or calisthenic dvd.

Following is a link to a dvd you may enjoy. I've occasionally worked out to Leslie Sansone's walking videos when I couldn't walk outdoors and did not wish to do some other program.

I found the workouts to be gentle, yet intense and you can choose whichever distance you will be walking.
