OK, so generally speaking, I love writing on the health topics contained in HEW.
But, with all of the topics covered on this site, I can’t possibly be into everything, all at once, right? Right.
But resistance bands are another matter.
They really, really are great!
I use them because they just fit into my lifestyle and my needs perfectly. So, if this sounds a little infomercially, well I’m being honest.
My investment in resistance bands is one of the 3 best fitness investments I’ve ever made. Those include à1) Set of dumbbells, 2) Stationary bike and 3) Resistance bands
I got all three for under $250, combined.
And, the benefits of resistance band exercises are plenty.
Benefits of using resistance exercise bands
* Just about any exercise you do with weights and other exercise equipment can be done with resistance bands.
* Resistance band exercises can be added to other strength building exercises using weights or gym equipment. This provides more ways to hit muscles making them stronger and bigger.
* Resistance bands are much more convenient than the other equipment. This is a big one if somewhat obvious. I store my bands in a little cardboard box in a closet.
* If you travel, you can just take your equipment with you. My set came with it’s own travel case.
* If you are a little older, resistance exercise bands are a good alternative to the heavy metal. They don’t seem to stress joints as much as weights and they are safer. This is especially true if you‘re working out alone.
* Inexpensive. You know what high end exercise equipment and weights cost. A lot. Joining a gym could cost even more. You can get a set of exercise bands for $30 - $40 though better systems may run up to $100.
Disadvantages of using resistance exercise bands
Really, there is only one disadvantage to using exercise bands and it is an important one for some people. If your aim is to build really massive muscles and awesome strength using only resistance bands, it probably wont happen. Some band enthusiasts have argued that more body and strength building can be accomplished with bands than with weights. I have never seen or heard of a bodybuilder who got that way through bands alone. For serious builders, exercise bands can be used in addition to weights and high end bodybuilding systems like Nautilus but they can’t be the only equipment used. Resistance band exercises are not versatile enough to allow for the kinds of stressors required to grow huge muscles. There are also particular body parts for which exercise bands do not do a really good job of building. Examples would include calves and abs.
