Exercise for a healthy heart Weightloss exercises Relieving stress and exercise
A new study from the Department of Cardiology in New Orleans, published in the American Journal of Medicine details how much simple changes can increase life expectancy. The study followed 522 heart patients. Patients were on a program of 12 weeks of exercise, including 10 minutes of warm-up, 30 to 40 minutes of aerobic exercise like walking, rowing or jogging, followed by a 10-minute stretch to cool down. Here are the eye popping results. Only 30 minutes of moderate exercise like jogging, fast paced walking or jogging, three times weekly, is needed for heart patients to significantly improve heart health. That’s it! No daily, routines, or long sessions or intense interval sessions. Sure, Healthy Exercise has pointed to the benefits of more intense sessions for superior health. Hey, if you have time, energy and motivation, well, go for it. But for adequate heart health, not very much is needed. The study also found that workouts were especially helpful for patients with high stress levels. Certainly, high stress levels have been linked to poor heart health in many studies. The study demonstrated that even mild exercise has psychological as well as physical benefits. So simple weight loss was not involved in improvement in health. The only real factor to boost health was exercise. It is not surprising that a couple of hours of moderate exercise per week, engaged in by middle aged to older people, did not produce weight loss. It takes a little more exertion for weight loss. However, if heart patients can also lose some excess weight, either through more vigorous exercise and/or diet, we could guess that benefits would be even greater.
