Pilates called his system Contrology because he intended his method to maximize the mind’s control of the muscles. In particular, pilates focuses on “core” muscles which increase balance and help support the spine. In some ways, Pilates seems to resemble Yoga though it avoids any spiritual dimension.

Traditionally, a Pilates exercise program was usually performed using a machine, known as the Pilates Reformer, which provides resistance & builds strength, develops proper alignment & posture & increases flexibility. Presently mat Pilates has become more popular.

What Pilates stresses

Breathing plays an extremely important role in Pilates. Any stoppage of normal breathing constitutes bad practice. Proper breathing also reduces tension in the upper neck and shoulders.

Relaxation even when doing Pilates is a goal as it increases focus & improves performance.

Alignment of key body parts is maintained throughout out movements & routine.

Control of muscles is another goal. Movements are to be performed with proper form even if intensity or number of movements decrease.

Precision is another key aspect of Pilates. As movements become more precise, the excellence is carried over into everyday life.

Routine reinforces what is learned & assures precision will be achieved.

Centering refers to the focus on the core muscles about the abs, lower back, hips & butt, collectively referred to as the “powerhouse.” A strong core radiates out to the rest of the limbs & extremities.

Flowing movement connects the different movements and help build strength & stamina.

Concentration is to be maintained throughout the routine for maximum benefits. Research has confirmed the powerful effect concentration plays on helping you reach physical goals.
