Again, the homemade exercise equipment is made from common household products. There is no construction required or tools necessary for the home made exercise equipment on this page.
To get right to the list, scroll down. A few words about adapting household stuff for exercise.
Most of us don’t have money or room to spare for a dedicated fitness room complete with the latest and best exercise equipment. Oh sure, most of us can get a couple of pieces of equipment and some weights but we will not have a fitness room that will look like a celebrity’s.
But don’t fret. There are lots of very decent alternatives to the $2,000 treadmills and the latest Bowflex.
One of our options is to do bodyweight exercises. Pair up your own bodyweight with a few knick knacks and you’ll have something to work with. For more, visit our page on bodyweight exercises
Actually, when you really think of it, a well-balanced exercise program (which includes engaging in sports) stresses bodyweight exercises. What are yoga & Pilates, walking, tennis, calisthenics, stretching, but bodyweight exercises? The “equipment” is your own body.
Okay, so that’s the easy part, thinking of your body as a piece of “home made exercise equipment.”
At the other end of difficulty re homemade exercise equipment is to go out and get materials and actually construct the stuff. You know, benches, lat bars, weights etc.
But that’s not what this page is about. If that’s what you want to do, you’ll need to search around the internet for DIY pages on home made exercise equipment.
This page is the lazy man’s (me!) DIY exercise equipment. Much of it is based on my own solutions over the decades for using household stuff as fitness equipment.
Many of the ideas are really simple, maybe even obvious. What you’ll be asked to do is adapt household items to use as fitness equipment.
So let’s get to our…
Top ten list of homemade exercise equipment
1) Stairs
Most of us have access to stairs. I can’t imagine a much more demanding exercise than stair walking or jogging.
Do a continuous routine of stair walking (jogging) for cardiovascular benefits. For strength training, do one legged step-ups. That’ll work the thighs really good. For a greater challenge, make the step up steeper by stepping up 2 or 3 steps. That’ll also get the back of the legs and the buttocks.
2) Milk crate
A sturdy milk crate placed on a non-slip floor can serve as an ideal piece of home made exercise equipment. For one, you could use it the same as you do stairs.
You can do leg strengthening exercises on them as you might with stairs. For an extra challenge, hold weights while doing one legged step-ups. For even extra challenge, stand farther back from crate, then step-up.
You can use them like steppers and follow along to a step program workout LINK on the TV or PC.
3) Soup cans
Or really, any weighted food cans. Use them for curls, shoulder and tricep presses, to increase weight during squats, etc etc.
For a greater aerobic workout, simply grab a couple of small cans and then do your stepping.
What’s nice about this homemade exercise equipment is that you can increase resistance by using heavier cans.
4) Weighted socks
Food cans getting too light? Then place one, two or even three cans in a tube sock. Make a knot at the openings and use to curl or press.
Be careful here. Please make sure the socks are sturdy, the knot secure and don’t clunk yourself on the head if doing shoulder presses. Ouch!
5) Milk or water jugs
You can fill empty milk or water jugs with water or sand and tape tops securely with duct tape. Then when you want to increase or decrease resistance, add or subtract more water or sand. To get the weight you're lifting, just weigh the jug on your bathroom scale.
