Tips on buying home treadmills follow in addition to some recommendations on buying specific treadmills for particular goals.

I would think a light pair of hand weights could be helpful to add an upper body dimension to treadmill workouts. Whatever accessories make treadmill workouts more inviting would also be helpful.

Be sure to have a water bottle holder attached to your treadmill. If you like to read, get one of those book/magazine/newspaper holders so you could walk & read simultaneously.

Having a TV set in front of you while tread milling could also help relieve some boredom & even amp up your workout. I like to watch sports or FitTV while cycling or tread milling at home.

There are many kinds of home exercise equipment you can buy but according to many studies, a treadmill might be the best home exercise equipment.

Studies have shown that people get more out of a treadmill than other fitness equipment because it is natural to walk or run.

Pricing a home treadmill

A typical treadmill is going to be a significant investment so be prepared to shell out some bucks here. If price is an important factor in your purchase, be careful to select the best home treadmill in that price range.

The price ranges generally break down to budget ($500 to $1,500), mid-range ($1,500 to $3,000) and expensive ($3,000 and up).

What to look for

The quality of the motor is extremely important because it gets the heaviest workout. The horsepower (HP) ratings can be confusing. Look for a treadmill’s "continuous duty rating" and go for 1.5 to 2.5 HP "continuous duty."

When testing treadmills, wear your workout shoes and clothes. Make sure the ride is not shaky or jerky. The hand rails should feel sturdy enough to support you and positioned so you can grip them easily and not block your arm motion. The belt must be wide enough and long enough for your stride.

Get a home treadmill with features

Boredom will kill any treadmill workouts. Choose a model that gives you the option to pre-set and program workouts to change pace and incline.

The incline and speed should be easy to adjustable right from the console. A pulse monitor is also a good feature. Some models may even plug into a video or audio player or the internet for new workouts.

Tempted to buy a manual treadmill instead of a motorized treadmill? Don’t.

Manual treadmills have many drawbacks as compared to motorized models. They are tough to get moving without using an extreme incline, and once in motion, you can't change the incline. The lower price also may also signal less sturdy construction.
