The importance of hip exercise follows. In addition to the benefits of exercises for hips we also feature pages on hip strengthening exercises, hip stretching exercises and hip pain exercise. (Links immediately below.)
Let’s start with the wisest of all the fitness instructors. The Yogis claim that the health of the spine is related to a person’s youthfulness. But if the spine is THE best indicator of vibrancy, then the health of the hips is second.
Just as the old and the sick often complain of bad backs, so too are complaints about hips that feel less flexible, less strong and less flexible, heard daily.
Just look at a much older person or someone who is out of shape. Notice how the back, or spine and the hips are noticeably out of whack, too weak, too tight. Or just recall how you felt when you got up out of bed after your first hike in years. Ouch!
Good reason why, as the hip is one of the most important joints in the body. It is involved in an incredible number of movements including flexing, extending, abduction, adduction and rotation.
Many hip exercises help develop the hip area, some strengthening, some stabilizing, others stretching.
Make absolutely sure that you perform the exercises using tried and true principals of working out to receive the full benefits of exercises for hips.
Be sure to first warm up the muscles around the hip joint. It’s easy too as just walking for 10 minutes should provide enough warmth and natural lubrication to get into the specific movements.
Benefits of exercises for hips
As pointed out above, the hips are involved in numerous movements so making sure your hips are in good shape will help keep you moving, naturally, effectively. If your hips are in good shape, you wont even notice them. That’s good.
Even the simple requirements of daily living often demand hip health. Turning to grab an object, bending to pick a tomato, thousands of other movements demand your hips (the hip area) be strong, flexible and balanced or stabilized.
It’s these specific qualities that hip exercise should address, remedy and improve.
Strength: Hips need to be strong. That would include joints, tendons and muscles in the hip area.
Flexibility: Hips must be flexible to be fully functional. Ever felt stiff in the hips? Think of how limited your movements were until your hips felt good again.
Stability & balance: Related to strength & flexibility but also includes proportionate ability. That is to say that it is important that hips are both strong and flexible in equal proportions, that left and right hips are both flexible and strong, that different surrounding muscles, tendons, ligaments and joints are healthy, limber, strong.
Functionality: Healthy hips will permit you to engage in all kinds of movements and complete a variety of tasks. One good example is play. So many games require hip flexibility and strength. The stops & starts & twists when playing basketball, the hip rotations when swinging a golf club, the same when dancing the fool.
