Don’t Let Work-Related Pressure Get the Best of You

By Kurt M. Ontiveros

“Work like a dog, live like a king” is a mantra I heard somewhere and it’s the best way that I would describe the way that I’ve been living. I’m a now-divorced man who’s almost at his retirement age. But can you believe that even before I get to live like a king during my retirement years, I already suffered from a heart attack because I have been working like adog?

It is perfectly fine to work hard, I guess. You have a family to raise, after all, bills to pay and every imaginable expense in the world to pay for. However, your working so hard shouldn’t reach a point where you are already on the brink of having a heart attack.

That is what happened to me literally. One day, while I was having a particularly stressful time at work, I found myself clutching at my chest because of the pain that shot through it.

Thinking that it was heartburn, I ignored the first few second, but had to call my assistant for help because I knew that something was seriously wrong.

A few hours later, I found myself lying on a hospital bed, with my doctor informing me that I had a heart attack. So what’s an almost-retired man like myself to do?

I took advantage of the offer of the higher ups to go for an early retirement, even before my health took its tool on me. So the moral of the story is that you shouldn’t let work-related pressures get the best of you. No job is worth literally having a heart attack for.

Right now, I am taking things a bit easier. I don’t have a team of employees to boss around anymore so the stressful job part has already been eliminated. The next thing that I worked on is eating as much heart-healthy foods as possible.

Finally, based on my doctor’s advice, I had to get as much physical exercise as I could. First thing I did was to buy an elliptical trainer, something which one of my colleagues recommended. I loved using it, too, because the gliding motion did not put undue stress on my joints.

I also took the time to play golf with my buddies from work. When I’m at home, I manually mow the lawn, run, and get as much physical exercise as this old heart can take.

The bad news is that from the initial heart attack that I had, some parts of my heart were already literally damaged. I’m hoping that since I am not dealing with job-related stress anymore, I won’t have to face the prospect of having a second heart attack anymore.

I’m trying to fight it off as long as possible, anyway, seeing as how I am already working my buns off to have as much cardio exercise as I can. By doing so, my heart will be healed enough for me to worry less about dying and spend more of my time doing what I intended to do prior to the heart attack, which is to live like a king.
