Exercises using elastic resistance has been around for a long time, perhaps a hundred years or more. It has been popular as both a fitness method and, progressively more so, as a way to rehabilitate injuries. Even today it has uses in both increasing performance and rehabilitation.
Similarities of free weights vs exercise bands
1) Each provides resistance
2) They each permit a free range of movement, unlike, for example, isometric exercises
3) They each permit variable speed of movement
4) Both also allow resistance intensity to progressive
For an effective resistance training program, those four features are essential.
HEW has suggested that for serious bodybuilding, the use of free weights is more important than exercise bands, though band exercises could be a good supplement to weights ib the same way that machines are.
And, yet studies have shown that muscle activity and peak load during elastic band exercises is very similar to free-weight resistance.
This suggests that the amount of muscle fibers activated is similar regardless of whether you use free weights or exercise bands. Also, the amount of force needed to complete the movements is also similar regardless of exercise equipment used.
Other studies have shown that elastic resistance training improves muscle strength and muscle size, while decreasing body fat, like free weight exercises do.
But the differences, outlined right below, suggest to us that resistance band exercises & free weight exercises are best used together because there are important contrasts. Each supplements the other.
Differences re free weights vs resistance bands
* One of the advantages of elastic resistance is that, unlike free weights, the bands do not rely on gravity to provide resistance.
So, for example, you can pull on or push off from, the resistance bands in any direction to achieve resistance. So you can do movements along the horizontal plane and the resistance still holds. With free weights, you need gravity to provide resistance. So resistance can only be provided on a vertical (up & down plane).
That also suggests that resistance band exercises can better imitate movements in real life and in sports. That should help you do those same movements more effectively.
* Since exercise bands do not require gravity for resistance, you can change the emphasis placed on muscles during certain exercises by changing the direction of pull or push of the elastic bands.
That is important for those who want to target specific muscles either for appearance or for strengthening for sport-specific movements.
* Also of elastic resistance exercises prevent “cheating” particular movements. Cheating is when you use momentum to get the weight moving.
* Since resistance band exercises do not depend on gravity it provides continuous tension in the muscles being exercises. In contrast, free weight movements lose much resistance at certain points in the movement. For example, when you curl a dumbbell, there is little resistance at the top of the movement. With elastic bands, the resistance actually increases at the top of the curl since the band is stretched out more.
Obviously, elastic resistance equipment is inexpensive, lightweight, easy to store and travel with. Weights are heavy, bulky and not transportable.
Research on free weights vs resistance bands
Research studies also confirm the specific benefits of resistance band exercises vs free weight exercises.
* A study from Truman State University (Kirksville, MO) found that including elastic resistance bench presses in their workout routines significantly increased bench press strength & power compared to those who only used free-weights.
* In another study from the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse in 2006 showed that using resistance band exercises in addition to free weight exercises resulted in more leg power than when only using free-weight exercises.
Many other studies also show some of the specific benefits of using free weights vs resistance bands.
