Well then, those differences must mean that by nature women’s exercises must be different than exercises for men. Right? Well, right?

Differences between exercises for women and men’s exercises

Well, really there are few physical differences between men’s bodies and women’s bodies. Men and women have the same muscles. These muscles work in the same way.

There are a few slight differences in joint angles and in the density of bones. A woman's physique has a different center point than a man's physique. The center of a women’s balance is lower which creates a different sense of balance.

So, there is a difference in the way women walk and sit and stand because of the slight differences in center of gravity. Fat and muscle deposits also vary somewhat when comparing women and men.

Women also have less cardiovascular capacity and muscular strength and endurance than men, on average. That’s just because women tend to be smaller than men. But, so what?

It really doesn’t change what the ideal exercises for women should consist of relative to men. The principles behind sound exercise programs are the same.

The real differences in exercise between men and women lie in expectations and preference.

Yes, women bodybuilders can be quite large and dense but still less so than male bodybuilders. So, expectations should be modified to account for reality.

An even bigger difference is really in preferences with women generally interested in a look that is, in some ways, like the ideal male look (fit, roundness of muscles) but with some differences. Women generally prefer tone over muscle, proportion over muscle massiveness.

Well good news for most of you women.

Working out like a man will not really appreciably transform your female physique into a masculine one. You will still not develop freaky muscles even if you lift weights.

If your workouts are balanced and consistent, you should develop the fit physique that most prefer without the hyper-masculine look, even if you lift a lot of weights.

The biggest mistake women make when exercising

Well if you haven’t already guessed it, far too many women’s exercises stress continuous moderate aerobics over interval aerobics and generally overemphasize aerobics over strength and bodybuilding and they place too much emphasis on the lower body over the upper body.

These are terrible mistakes. What value is gained from doing 18 hours of moderate cycling instead of 10 over a week? What’s gained from avoiding strengthening exercises especially for the upper body?

None.

In fact, the de-emphasis of strengthening exercises and the de-emphasis on the upper body leads to what most women try to delay, mounting fat around the middle and weakening of bones. Strengthening exercises build some muscle and bone and this extra muscle and bone actually helps keep you from gaining fat.

Pregnancy and exercises

Many women will have a particular concern that men will never have and should certainly tailor exercise routines to that particular. Pregnancy.

Women must be especially diligent about conditioning the muscles of the back and abdominal that are involved as they go through pregnancy and childbirth. This will assure that the process goes as well as possible.
