The brain improvement exercises benefit the functions of the brain - improve thinking & memory & may prevent diseases of the brain such as Alzheimer’s.
On our umbrella page on brain exercises we discussed how & why the brain effects the body & the body effects the brain & how you can use this to improve body & mind.
We also have a page on the popular LINK Brain Gym Exercises with free examples.
Following are even easier ways to improve your brain with exercise & improve your body through thinking.
1)Switch hands - how’s that for a quick & free brain exercise? Just switch hands to control the computer mouse or brush your teeth or eat supper, etc.
This exercise can strengthen neural connections in the brain & even create new ones.
2)One of the startling discoveries regarding exercises for brain improvement is to simply think about your muscles, especially when you are using that muscle.
Cleveland Clinic Foundation showed that the exercise benefits of thinking on a muscle is that it can be strengthened. For 12 weeks (five minutes a day, five days per week) 30 healthy young adults imagined either using the muscle of their little finger or of their elbow flexor.
Compared to a control group that did no imaginary exercises & showed no strength gains, the little-finger group increased their pinky muscle strength by 35%. The elbow flexor group increased elbow strength by 13.4%.
We can only guess why. So when you work out some body part(s), imagine those parts growing, firming, slimming, shaping, whatever your goal is.
3)Want another free brain exercise? Just learn NEW things. This strengthens neural connections & may create new ones like doing tasks with the weak hand. Take up chess, yoga, painting. Use different muscles & different brain cells & they constitute exercises for brain & your very body changes.
4)A good way to do new things is to travel. Travel will stimulate your brain not to mention force you to use your body. If you cant go on that far flung trip, simply walk new routes to your friend’s house or the store.
5) Lawrence Katz, a neurobiologist at Duke, manipulates senses to strengthen, renew brain cells. Examples of his exercises for the brain, called Neurobics, include dressing or shampooing with your eyes closed, communicating during meals without speaking, doing two activities at once, like painting & reading. The possibilities are endless.
6)READ. Far too few people read, especially after college. Read actively, forming images as you read, anticipating what’s coming next, making connections between text & your life.
7) Numerous studies show that simply starting a progressive system of walking exercise benefits thinking & helps maintain memory even as you age. If you could mix in a few runs, even better. Running may even help prevent or delay degenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s.
The above brain improvement exercises are just examples of how staying active & trying new things benefits your mind. Try them & see what happens. Especially if you are an older adult or encourage older adults in your life to try out these brain exercises.
