Defining exercise induced asthmaEIA is a form of asthma that results from prolonged or vigorous or physical exertion. Most people dealing with chronic asthma experience symptoms when exercising. But many people who don’t suffer from chronic asthma develop symptoms only during exercise. How does exercise cause asthma? When breathing normally, air we take in is warmed and moistened by the nasal passages. Because we usually breathe through our mouths when we exercise, we are inhaling colder and drier air. The muscle bands around the airways are responsive to changes in humidity and temperature. They react by contracting and narrowing the airway. This leads to exercised induced asthma. Symptoms include: * Tightening of the chest * Coughing with asthma * Shortness of breath when exercising * Wheezing * Unusual fatigue while exercising These symptoms usually start 5 to 20 minutes after the start of exercise, or 5 to 10 minutes after brief exercise has stopped. If you are experiencing the above when exercising, tell your doctor. Should you avoid exercise because of exercise induced asthma? Absolutely not. There are ways to asthma symptoms which let you to engage in normal physical activity. Even Olympic athletes deal with asthma during exercise. In fact, in the 1996 Olympic Games, one sixth of the athletes had asthma. Yet, they competed successfully in a variety of activities. Athletes dealing with asthma include the following: * Jerome Bettis - NFL running back for Super bowl champion Steelers * Jackie Joyner-Kersee legendary track and field participant * Dennis Rodman, NBA basketball great * Amy Van Dyken in swimming * Ray Bourque, NHL hockey player Can you prevent exercise induced asthma? EIA can be prevented with asthma inhalers or bronchodilators by using before exercise to control and prevent exercise induced asthma. The leading asthma medications are the short-acting beta-2 agonists like albuterol. Take 15 to 20 minutes before exercise to prevent the airways from contracting. This helps prevent EIA for 4 to 6 hours. Longer acting beta-2 agonists can also be useful. These include Serevent and Foradil, lend 12-hour control. Taken in the morning, exercise induced asthma may be avoided throughout the day. Still have an asthma inhaler available just in case symptoms still occur. In addition to meds, warming up before exercising and cooling down afterward can help prevent asthma If you are dealing with allergies and asthma, limit exercise during high pollen days or when temperatures are very low and air pollution levels are high.
