A discussion on benefits of exercise for osteoporosis follows. We also include links (below) to our pages on specific exercises to prevent osteoporosis and osteoporosis exercises for persons diagnosed with condition.
You can exercise for osteoporosis in an effort to prevent and correct it. That is because exercise, especially weight bearing exercise, can increase or maintain bone mass.
Exercise builds bone mass in children and teens, moderately increases bone mass in middle aged adults and maintains bone mass or slightly increases bone mass in seniors.
What is osteoporosis?
Osteoporosis is a bone disease. It’s essentially porous bones which features low bone mass and deterioration of bone tissue.
Symptoms of osteoporosis
Osteoporosis acts silently, with few symptoms often until a fracture occurs.
Other signs of osteoporosis include loss of height, back problems, stooping, loss of strength and compromised balance.
Who’s at risk for osteoporosis?
Osteoporosis affects all ethnic groups but Caucasians and Asians are at highest risks.
It can occur at any age but incidence increases with age.
It is relatively common in developed countries.
Women are four times more likely to develop osteoporosis than are men. For example, in the U.S., 55% of people over 50 years of age suffer from it.
However, while osteoporosis is an important consideration for older adults it is also an important one for children and teens.
Children need to exercise to prevent osteoporosis
Simply put, building strong bones through exercise during the teen years, and certainly before the age of 30, is the best strategy for avoiding bone loss in senior years. That is because developing stronger, denser bones during adolescence translates into stronger bones when you are older.
Engaging in exercises to prevent osteoporosis is kind of easy for kids as they can engage in weight bearing activities such as volleyball, basketball, gymnastics, etc.
Preventing osteoporosis with exercises
There are ways to exercise to prevent osteoporosis.
There are also good osteoporosis exercises for patients suffering from it.
Briefly, exercises that stress bone and muscle, resistance exercises and weight bearing movements are best for preventing, treating osteoporosis.
Aerobic exercises, while beneficial for overall health, are not especially good for preventing or correcting osteoporosis.
Links to Healthy World Online pages on osteoporosis
Healthy Exercise World has several pages on exercises which are appropriate for people who wish to exercise for osteoporosis in ways that are challenging and creative.
Remember that the exercises are guidelines. Do the ones you could do, skip ones you can’t do or that cause pain and modify them as you must. For example, you may need to do modified pushups (knees on ground) rather than full pushups.
Finally, our sister site on the importance of healthy water on our well-being contains a very important page on water and osteoporosis--> dehydration causes osteoporosis
