Would you choose exercise diet, if you had to, in order to stay or get healthy, lose weight or fat?
Frankly, if you are asking about the contrast between benefit of diet to exercise, to take a short cut to health, you are wasting your time.
We present some facts, but the answers to the relative benefit of a good diet & exercise aren't clear.
Surely, the lack of one could ruin your efforts in the other.
Also, the best effect would come from exercise & dieting sensibly.
Following is a general discussion of the issue.
Immediately following are specific links comparing exercise & dieting when it comes to fat loss, weight loss & health/disease prevention/treatment.
But which one you would stress if you had to? EXERCISE
Sensible, appropriate, paced, graduated exercise is the best way to stay healthy, prevent illness, improve mental health, raise self-esteem, etc. etc.
The great fitness writer & lecturer, Covert Bailey, observed that if exercise was a pill, it would be more effective than any drug or imagined fountain of youth.
Exercise effects so many parts & functions of our bodies that it could be regarded as a panacea for that ails us.
Why exercise "wins" the exercise diet debate
*The question of the proper diet is more complicated than the question of exercise routine.
Proper diet raises questions of goals: weightloss? fat loss? fiber? nutritional intake? supplementation? etc. etc.
Exercise routine is simpler. Wind her up & GO. Just do it.
*Activity & exercise is always a main factor in our well being. Even as we age.
Proper diet takes on greater importance as we age. Yes, it's important that our kids eat well too but we see plenty of teens who are remarkably healthy & fit, through exercise, while jamming any foodstuffs down their throats.
The metabolism of youth takes care of many errors. But it wont last.
As the metabolism of growth slows down & becomes less efficient, food choices take on greater importance.
Yet, exercise & activity remains at least as important as diet when it comes to health.
*Our bodies must exercise or things go downhill. There's no substitute for exercise. Physically, we can't adapt to inactivity - we simply become less fit & healthy.
But we can adapt, somewhat, to dieting lapses & errors. It'll catch up in time but we usually have some time to straighten out.
Briefly, our bodies demand exercise for flexibility, strengthening and endurance.
Exercise & dieting debate - why the media prefers diet
Is there any doubt that there are more books, discussions & focus on diet vs exercise routine? Hardly. Why?
*TIME Diet doesn't subtract time away from other things. We could eat well or poorly in the same time span. Exercise demands time away from many diversions or just conking out.
*COST Good diet doesn't have to cost more than bad diet. Some exercise-related stuff costs money.
*EFFORT Eating properly doesn't take effort. Will power, yes, effort, no. Exercise is all about effort.
*MONEY Diet stuff is a billion dollar industry. There is some money in the exercise indistry but a couple of investments in equipment is enough or heck, you could just go out & walk or run. It's free.
Again, to sum up, while we feel that the exercise diet debate is won by exercise, it should really be a nonissue for persons who take their health seriously.
