* Find a local running shoe store that understands runners and walkers needs & will take the time to fit you correctly.
* The comfortable walking shoes should have good shock absorption.
* The best walking shoes should also be stiffer and more supportive than running shoes.
* Depending on how your foot strikes the ground, you should look for specific features in the top walking sneakers.
A) Pronators walk on the inner side of their feet. They should look for a shoe with a motion control device in the midsole. They also should look for a straight shoe with support for the inside of the foot. This prevents you from overusing the inside edge of your foot.
B) Supinators walk on the outer side of their feet. They should look for greater stability and a shoe with an outer sole, insole, and midsole designed for extra shock absorbency.
C) People with neutral ground strikes can wear just about any shoe but shouldn’t neglect good walking shoe features.
* Take note of injury patterns
A) If you often feel pain in your ankles, knees, hips, or lower back, look for a well-cushioned comfortable walking shoes.
B) If you suffer from corns, bunions, and blisters, look for shoes with a wide toe box. Look for widths ranging from AAA to EEE.
* Ask for shoes that are a size to a size and a half larger than your dress shoes.
* Put on both shoes and lace them up completely. Walk around for a few minutes to get the feel of the shoe.
* Test several different shoe models.
* Try on shoes later in the day. Your feet swell during the course of the day, so shoes that fit in the morning may be too tight for afternoon workouts. Comfortable walking shoes have about a thumbnail's space between your longest toe and the end of the toe box.
* If you really love a shoe after a few workouts, go back & buy a couple pairs of the same shoe. Shoe companies often phase out shoe models on a regular basis.
* Do not buy an uncomfortable shoe expecting it to get broken in.
* Even the best walking shoes do not have to have the extra cushion that sneakers for high impact sports have to have. Still, replace your shoes every 500 miles or as you see wear on the soles.
* It’s a good idea to rotate your walking shoes. Buy a new pair of shoes after a few hundred miles and rotate it with your older shoe so you can recognize when the older pair has lost its cushioning and support.
* I like to wear an extra pair of sweat socks & add a cushion insole for added cushioning & sanitary reasons.
