There are really 2 groups of benefits of abdominal exercises:

1) Functional - Strong supple abs help you DO things. Like, twist slightly and pick up your toddler, or put some umph in your tennis or golf swing, ward off pain if you are clocked around your midsection, etc.

Strong abdominal muscles also help support your back. In fact, many back problems are caused by weak stomach muscles.

Yoga enthusiasts always tell you that exercising abs also works to tone and improve functioning of the smooth muscles underneath abs. The colon, liver, bladder, etc.

2) Cosmetic - better conditioned ab muscles help you keep that trim look. If you’re are lucky, you may even sport the vaunted 6 packs.

Note, however, that exercising abs will not result in weight loss. Also, for any show of stomach definition, you will need to lose fat all over. That is why smarty pants like me always say that the best exercise for showing off abs is fat burning exercises.
