If you’re dealing with asthma that's exercise induced, some activities are better than others.

Generally, activities involving short, intermittent bursts of exertion are generally well tolerated by people with exercise-induced asthma. These include gymnastics, volleyball, walking, baseball, and wrestling.

Guess what? Healthy Exercise World maintains that such activities may be best for fitness. For more on this, go to our page on high intensity interval training

You can still engage in activities that involve long periods of exertion. These include soccer, distance running, basketball, and field hockey. However, note that these may be less well tolerated. Also, cold weather sports like cross-country skiing, ice hockey and ice skating can also lead to exercise induced asthma. Still, you may be able to fully participate in these activities with proper precautions.

Swimming, which is also good for those with asthma because it is usually performed in a warm, moist air environment.

For asthmatics, being active is especially important as exercise indirectly benefits breathing passages by helping other systems remain healthy like the heart and liver.

Tips to prevent & treat exercise induced asthma

* Be sure to do warm-up exercises and to cool down after exercise.

* Always use your pre-exercise inhaled drugs before starting exercise

* Don’t exercise outdoors if you have allergies when pollen counts are high and also avoid exercising outdoors when air pollution is high

* If the weather is cold, exercise indoors or wear a mask or scarf over your nose and mouth

* Restrict exercise if you have a viral infection

* Exercise at an appropriate level for you

But never use asthma as an excuse to avoid exercise. With proper diagnosis, precautions and treatment of asthma, you should be able to engage in an exercise program without experiencing asthma symptoms.
