* Exercise to ward off colds

And just in time for the cold and flu season, a new study finds exercise keeps colds and other infectious respiratory diseases at bay.

Hey, exercising offers total (systemic) benefits so why would it surprise us that research suggests exercising helps us ward off seasonal infections?

Exercise guru and researcher, Covert Bailey once said that if we could develop a pill that conferred the benefits of exercise it would be the most revolutionary medical discovery of the century.

Many other prescription meds would become obsolete, we would all live longer lives of the highest quality. So, just do it.

* Herbal remedy for relaxation? Wine

Wine, i.e. grapes. Just a glass (4 ounces) before bed really does take the edge off.

This may not be news to many of you but note, don’t drink that 2nd glass or relaxing effects of 1st glass get reversed and sleep quality suffers.

Add other beneficial effects, especially for red wine, like the contained antioxidants that prevent cancer and reverse & prevent heart disease, and you’ll agree that a glass of wine is a super herbal remedy and a perfect night cap.

* Don’t forget the fish oil supplements, or the fish

The research on fish oil supplements is conflicting. A lot may depend on what kind of supplement you take. For example, salmon vs. krill oil.

But there’s one benefit that fish oil has consistently been shown to impart that makes it a powerhouse supplement. It lowers the risk of heart attack for all takers including for “healthy” people.

Oh, obviously, eating good healthy fish is better yet. So go have ½ can of tuna or a few ounces of salmon or sardines. On those days, skip the supplements.

* California’s water contamination problem

If you live in the San Bernadino area of California, you are certainly aware of the recent water problems there.

Briefly the town’s water was found to be contaminated with perchlorate, a toxic chemical used to make explosives and rocket fuel.

But the problem of perchlorate in the water is much more widespread being detected in 35 states.

The more basic problem is that industrialization proceeds onward worldwide leading to spillover into our environment. The march only speeds up as other nations industrialize further.

I suspect the problem of contaminated water and water quality will soon become a political issue. In the meantime, be sure you know the quality of the water you use and consider using filters to assure better water quality.

* P.S. What can you do in one year, 2011

One year ago, Healthy World Digest encouraged you to think about what you can do in only one year. Click for issue

We reminded you of what Newton accomplished in just a year, while he was sick much less.

Hopefully 2010 was a productive one for you. I lost about 30 pounds, improved my cardio conditioning and strength, furthered Healthy World websites and am starting to develop a radio show, details coming soon. What did you do? Let us know.

Whatever you did or didn’t do, don’t stop or give up now. Better yourself. Better your loved ones. Better your community.

Outline some goals. Turn ‘em into resolutions. Then do it.

In a year, you’ll look back and say, ‘with all the ups and downs, I still did’ this and that. Then you can take a deep, satisfied breath before you forge ahead.

See you next year and feel free to contact Healthy World if you have questions, concerns, advice.

Happy Holidays, & a very Happy New Year to you and loved ones.
